Recently I wrote a post called The Principle of Eternal Lives. I knew when I shared this that it would be contradictory to the paradigm many have of the pre-mortal and post-mortal existence. I don’t want to debate any of this, so please simply consider my answers and make your own prayerful conclusions. Its not my job to convince anyone of anything. The purpose of sharing these things is to formulate questions to ask the Lord to receive your own revelation.
Comment: In the circle representing “Pre-Mortal 1st Estate” you state that “None commit sin until they partake of mortality.” However, we all had our agency in pre mortality. With agency comes the ability to sin.
My response: The prerequisite of sin is not agency but knowledge. Adam and Eve sinned when they partook of the “fruit”(knowledge) which caused them to comprehend their nakedness. (lack of knowledge.) One cannot be condemned if they do not know the law. Each spirit in their first estate is like an Adam or Eve in their innocence.
“For behold that all little children are alive in Christ, and also all they that are without the law. For the power of redemption cometh on all them that have no law; wherefore, he that is not condemned, or he that is under no condemnation, cannot repent; and unto such baptism availeth nothing—“ (Moroni 8:22)
Adam and Eve were commanded to not partake of the fruit of knowledge because it was premature. The spirits that abide the first estate are not given a commandment to “not partake,” but are given this fruit of life freely so that they may know the good from the evil. Satan cannot claim them until they experience such a thing and choose him over the Father.
Comment: The very fact that a third part of God’s children chose contrary to his plan shows not only that we could sin but that we did sin in premortality.
My Response: This is linear thinking where it is assumed that all those who dwell upon this earth are living in a second estate, or first time scenario. Who are the third part and where are they in their progression or digression?
Comment: In fact, those who followed the Adversary sinned to such a degree that they are called the “Sons of Perdition.”
Response: To become a Son of Perdition requires one to deny the Holy Ghost and shed innocent blood, (D&C 132:27) which cannot occur unless one has been previously exalted and shed the blood of a Son or Daughter of God. You cannot effectively deny the Holy Ghost unless you have been given the Gift of the Holy Ghost and the Baptism of Fire, walked with God and then killed another “innocent” son or daughter of God.
Comment: Although the Lord’s atonement occurred in the meridian of time, it’s effects flow both forward and backward in time. The effects that flowed backward in time didn’t stop with Adam and Eve but carried as far back as premortality. While we were in premortality, it was our faith in Jesus’ future mortal atonement which qualified us for a forgiveness of our sins that we committed during that sphere of action. This is why Jesus was considered as “slain from the foundation of the world.”
Response: This is true that Jesus’ atonement is for all the Seed of Adam both before the foundation of the world and after. But who are the Seed of Adam? Who are the Noble and Great Ones? Who are the Just Men and Women Made Perfect? Who are the Sons of Perdition? This sphere is what is referred to as the Battlefield of Souls and we are choosing to either follow God, follow Satan, or do nothing and remain Telestial forever, until we choose to either be “reborn” in the image of Christ, or to follow the Adversary.
To understand the mysteries of godliness is to understand our very reason for existence. To learn more about these principles of Eternal Lives please refer to the Translation of the Book of Moses.
