Misconceptions Regarding Satan

There is a lot of misconceptions about the War in Heaven because of false traditions. Here is a short list with corrections:

1. It happened in the pre-existence. (Yes, but continues now and for eternity. There is no end because it is the process by which progression is achieved.)
2. Satan lost, God won. (Incorrect. Their is a pattern by which Satan builds his kingdom and God builds His. This earth belongs to the Lord because it (the earth) kept its everlasting covenant. There are other worlds that belong to darkness, but many kinds of beings hash out their kingdoms here as they fill the measure of their creation.)
3. Satan’s followers were tricked. (False. Becoming a son of perdition is a calculative, deliberate move to establish their own dominion.)
4. Outer Darkness is a place of nothingness. (False. It is a dominion outside of the firmament of God, a mirror dimension where these beings seek their personal gratification for eternity. It contains its own kingdoms and principalities increasing for eternity, but without light and glory.)
5. Satan or devils can never stand in the presence of God. (False. The Throne is regularly visited by demons, escorted by God’s angels, as they stand witness against the Lord’s anointed.)
6. Evil spirits who followed Satan can never have a body. (False. Fourth estate angels, making previous covenant with Satan can condescend, taking bodies from the children of men. They continue to do so today.)
7. Satan never keeps his promises. (False, he is considered the true messiah to those who worship Lucifer and he promises comfort, eternal life, wealth, and many blessings to his followers.)
8. Satan does evil and atrocious things because he just loves to do it. (Yes and no. He causes mayhem among this world to strengthen his position. Great rewards for his followers and pain and suffering for all else. Many of the blessings God promises the righteous Satan also promises the damned, the difference being God is about sacrificing for others, and Satan is about seeking self. God is love, Satan is self-love.)
9. One third of God’s children followed Satan. (False. It was a “third part,” meaning there are three categories: those who seek darkness, those who seek light, and those who do not seek.)

  • There is even more, but it is important to know the truth regarding the enemy in order to stand against him. Light always triumphs over darkness when we adhere to the rules, but that’s another post.

  4. I think you chose a good word, “content.” They do not have joy, but are satisfied with what they become. There is wailing and gnashing of teeth, as there is sensual overload in all its forms in that realm. Pain, suffering, pleasure, beauty, ugliness, but no love.

  5. Most of the second estate beings in this world are among the category that do not seek. They will remain telestial forever unless they repent.

I’m struggling to understand the following: “Fourth estate angels, making previous covenant with Satan can condescend, taking bodies from the children of men. They continue to do so today.” Presumably, you mean that these beings “gain a body” by possessing the bodies of mortals who have allowed them (consciously or unconsciously) to enter in.

I don’t know what you mean by “fourth estate angels.” Are these angels who were previously righteous, but who have fallen?

  7. I do not mean that they possess other’s bodies. This statement is one of the mysteries. I would refer you to my blog categories “Eternal Lives” and “Book of Moses” to dig deeper into that topic.

  10. My understanding is that there are about 70 from the original 200, 3-4,000 sons of perdition, but tens of thousands more damned spirits that also inhabit bodies.

I wonder what could cause beings who have reached that higher level of progression, light, and knowledge to rebel against God. What is it they find so tempting? I suspect they gain some kind of power without paying the price.

Since God is all knowing and seeing, I don’t believe that Satan ‘s rebellion and being cast out was beyond God’s foreknowledge. Therefore, after years of pondering Satan’s role, I have these two conclusions. Will you help me to understand how he came to be? 1. God foresaw that Satan would rebel and become the devil, and God needed that role done to create opposition, so He did not stop him. And He lets Satan continue in mayhem for His purposes in exalting us. Or, and this is the one I find more likely– 2. God needed a “devil” to bring our learning to pass. And so He asked Satan to accept the role as the tempter. And Satan, trusting and loving God (therefore being a totally righteous being), agreed. Are either of these theories correct? And also, does Satan get a chance to be redeemed. At some point (assuming he is truly evil) will their come a time when he too wants to repent and come unto Christ?

To what extent do these 4th estate fallen angels no their place and how early? Do I assume right that Satan finds them and molds them as God does to his own chosen? .

am I under the correct impression that fourth estate beings have a soft guarantee for the promise of eternal life? Or is it a secure promise? In other words, because they are 4th estate beings does (like George Washington etc) the Guiding hand of God’s direction that leads them to making choices in the second state / this earth life does that guiding hand reveal itself in a fail proof way that eventually leads to these beings ( exercising proper agency) receiving the sure word of prophesy etc in this existence? Obviously fallen angels don’t apply?

In every position of darkness one might choose, (including sons of perdition) is there always still a chance for souls to come to God? Or is there a truly a cut off at some point.

  19. If someone receives their baptism of darkness and becomes a son or daughter of Satan they cannot receive repentance through the atonement. The only way to break free is to give everything up and start again as an intelligence. Few ever do because of fear. There are many bad spirits that have not gone that far that do repent, but the lure of the Adversary is strong to those seeking their own gratifications.

  20. Fourth estate beings are already sealed to Eternal Life. Their sacrifice is to put aside their glory and suffer again in the world to help save souls. Sometimes they stumble, but are marked as God’s servants.

  21. All 4th Estate are awakened at some point. Sons of Perdition make covenants with Satan before they are born. Satan knows who they are and they are awakened and nurtured early on in their lives.

  22. It is an eternal principle in heaven that there is opposition in all things. God allows all His creations to choose the path that they want, even if it means spiritual death. Satan will not ever repent, not that he can’t, but because he relishes his place. He chose to take his path to expand his own dominion.

  23. God had nothing to do with Satan’s choice to rebel. Lucifer, the equivalent of our Heavenly Father of Light, recruited Satan (a title) and taught him how to secure his own dominion in this world.

So, I just have to ask. Are these the same things that are written on the 24 Jaredite plates? Alma told his son Helaman in Alma 37 that the Jaredites were destroyed because of secret combinations and that their oaths, covenants, agreements, and signs and wonders were written on the plates. Alma told his son Helaman to not reveal them to the people for fear they would be led into darkness. I never considered that there is a literal, formal Kingdom of Darkness set up to imitate the Kingdom of Light. It makes sense but is fairly disturbing.

To strive to be the embodiment of these words / scripture below) is all the more motivating in connection with what you have shared about the great deceiver

    Moroni 10
30 And again I would exhort you that ye would come unto Christ, and lay hold upon every good gift, and touch not the evil gift, nor the unclean thing.

31 And awake, and arise from the dust, O Jerusalem; yea, and put on thy beautiful garments, O daughter of Zion; and strengthen thy stakes and enlarge thy borders forever, that thou mayest no more be confounded, that the covenants of the Eternal Father which he hath made unto thee, O house of Israel, may be fulfilled.

32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.

33 And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.

So what weā€™ve been taught that those of us here on earth with a body are the ones that chose Christ, was it wrong? If itā€™s right why then the sons of perdition would have a body? When the ones that chose Satan were cast out and did not receive a body, I donā€™t know where this doctrine comes from, if it was from Joseph Smith or Brigham Young, any light on this? They were cast out to earth, I always thought this meant they were only spirits, but what you shared makes sense if we are going to have opposition in all things.

  31. I don’t know where that came from. There are all kinds here in mortality. Most have never had any intention to follow Christ. As far as Satan, the Lord allows him to afflict us and as we lean on Him we are strengthened. When confronted by evil spirits the best thing to do is fill yourself with light. Pure love for Jesus casteh out all fear. Paul should have added those words to his letter. Fear strengthens the Adversary. Once you learn to discern revelation the Lord will guide you through all these experiences. It sounds like you were hearing Him clearly on the last night. Clearly you are being prepared to open your spiritual eyes.

I’d like to clear up a misconception I had about sons of perdition until I read your books. Many others in the church have this misconception too, so the following info is good for others to know.

I always wondered, are most apostates from the church really sons of perdition? Are most sons of perdition apostates? What if they’re just misguided people who fell prey to deceptions and slander? Are they really incapable of repenting? Are they bound for outer darkness? Are only apostates of the church capable of denying Jesus Christ when the heavens have been opened to them? Have they essentially “crucified to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame?”

These thoughts didn’t always make sense to me. Some of the most evil people in the world never heard of the church or had anything to do with it. They seem like much more suitable candidates for perdition than simply those who have fallen away from the church. The main reason I wondered about these things was because of the King Follett Discourse.

In the standard version of the King Follett Discourse, Joseph Smith supposedly said the following:

“All sins shall be forgiven, except the sin against the Holy Ghost; for Jesus will save all except the sons of perdition. [… lengthy definition of a son of perdition …] This is the case with many apostates of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

These words are NOT accurate! Joseph probably did not say this exact statement in his sermon.

Most people don’t know this, but no complete manuscript of the King Follett Discourse exists. The scribes who reported it did not record Joseph’s words stenographically, so none of the individual accounts provide a complete record of what he said. The only way to get a full report was to amalgamate the individual reports. The best-known amalgamation was prepared in the 1850s for the “Manuscript History of the Church.” That is the version which you read above, which most are familiar with.

However, it was not the earliest amalgamation. On August 15, 1844, the Times and Seasons published the first official report of the discourse. It gave a different version of Joseph’s words:

“All sins shall be forgiven except the sin against the Holy Ghost: after a man has sinned against the Holy Ghost there is no repentance for him, he has got to say that the sun does not shine, while he sees it, he has got to deny Jesus Christ when the heavens were open to him, and from that time they begin to be enemies, like many of the apostates of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. When a man begins to be an enemy, he hunts me. They seek to kill me; they thirst for my blood; they never cease. He has the same spirit that they had who crucified the Lord of Life: the same spirit that sins against the Holy Ghost. You cannot bring them to repentance.”

I want to highlight a particular phrase from Joseph: “they begin to be enemies, LIKE many of the apostates of the church.” Did Joseph say that apostates from the church are usually sons of perdition? No. He compared sons of perdition to apostates. How? By saying that they are enemies, following similar patterns of behavior, with similar violent desires to kill and destroy him.

He was giving people an example to liken and understand the way sons of perdition behave. He was NOT saying apostates are usually sons of perdition, or vice versa. I believe one of the scribes misunderstood Joseph (or misheard him) and reported Joseph as saying “apostates = sons of perdition.” This was an unfortunate mistake and has helped perpetuate a misunderstanding of sons of perdition for quite a long time.

PR, could you elaborate on your last sentence, “Light always triumphs over darkness when we adhere to the rules”? It seems that Satan often wants us to think that he is superior to God and that he can triumph over God, but this doesn’t seem true. Satan’s only success is his acquisition of more gratification and dominion. But in reality it seems he is completely inferior to God and cannot subjugate or conquer the Lord or His servants, despite his wishes. [When I say “rules” I’m referring to the means by which we act as a servant of God. We cannot contend with Satan without God’s authority or permission. Acting out of pride, anger, or any kind of presupposed authority because some person told you that you simply must say certain words and a priesthood certificate gives you authority. PR]

PR said (9. One-third of God’s children followed Satan. (False. It was a “third part,” meaning there are three categories: those who seek darkness, those who seek light and those who do not search.)
What is the part that actually followed satan? Is this part of the children of God who came to earth by birth? [There are few that came down, the fallen angels or fourth estate. They are few in numbers. The vast number that come down are those who are what I call “children of men.” These are those who do not come by covenant, but by invitation. The “third part” are those who do the bidding of the Adversary. These are disembodied spirits, those who have had never had physical bodies in this realm, and those who have died and chosen to fallow Satan, and those who make covenants with Satan in this life. These are all that include the third part. PR]
