The Beatitudes – A Blueprint of the Second Comforter

The Beatitudes are the Lord’s blueprint for how one may receive their Second Comforter and stand in the presence of God. It was first taught to a select group of disciples upon a mountain in Judea, then, to His disciples after His resurrection upon the Mount of Olives. Each time the Lord visited His people after His resurrection He taught these principles, so they could be taught to others. The perfect pattern to come to the Father.

3 Nephi 12

1 And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto Nephi, and to those who had been called, (now the number of them who had been called, and received power and authority to baptize, was twelve) and behold, he stretched forth his hand unto the multitude, and cried unto them, saying: Blessed are ye if ye shall give heed unto the words of these twelve whom I have chosen from among you to minister unto you, and to be your servants; and unto them I have given power that they may baptize you with water; and after that ye are baptized with water, behold, I will baptize you with fire and with the Holy Ghost; [First comes baptism by earthly servants, then the Lord Himself will baptize with fire.] therefore blessed[Blessed is another word for having one’s calling and election made sure, or ascending. Should be written “Blessed.”] are ye if ye shall believe in me and be baptized, after that ye have seen me and know that I am. [Then shall come the Second Comforter.]

2 And again, more blessed [Additionally Blessed] are they who shall believe in your words because that ye shall testify that ye have seen me, and that ye know that I am. [The faith of those who believe by hearing their testimonies shall also have the SC.] Yea, blessed are they who shall believe in your words, and come down into the depths of humility and be baptized, for they shall be visited with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and shall receive a remission of their sins.

[At this point the Lord gives a concise blueprint for how one can receive their Second Comforter, and be perfected in Spirit.]

3 Yea, blessed are the poor in spirit who come unto me, [Broken heart and contrite spirit] for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [They shall come to the Throne.]

4 And again, blessed are all they that mourn, [Cry unto the Lord] for they shall be comforted. [I shall be with them.]

5 And blessed are the meek, [Submit to the revelations received.] for they shall inherit the earth. [Shall stand with the Church of the Firstborn when the earth is changed and exalted.]

6 And blessed are all they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, [Those who seek my will above all things.] for they shall be filled with the Holy Ghost. [Their spirits shall be quickened and be one with Me.]

7 And blessed are the merciful, [Filled with compassion for others.] for they shall obtain mercy. [Grace or divine progression through Christ.]

8 And blessed are all the pure in heart, [Real intent, pure love of God.] for they shall see God.

9 And blessed are all the peacemakers, [Those who bring souls to Me.] for they shall be called the children of God. [Called My sons and daughters, Servants of the Most High.]

10 And blessed are all they who are persecuted for my name’s sake, [Willing to give up their life for me.] for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [They shall come to the Throne.]

11 And blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake; [Give up your reputation among men.]

12 For ye shall have great joy and be exceedingly glad, for great shall be your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you.

Absolutely love it! A while back I had multiple impressions to memorize the sermon on the mount / the beatitudes. I am and have been seeking the second comforter. I want his word writtin on and in my heart. I experienced a little lull / opposition a few months after these impressions. During this time of difficulty the Lord spoke to my mind to do not delay and get back to the scriptures. I asked him if there was anything he wanted me to commit to memory. The immediate response that came to my mind was Matthew 5. I was reminded in a most clear way of The Impressions I had a few months previous to this Revelation that I should memorize the Beatitudes! I have started in the last half of 3 nephi 11. Reading your post gladdens my heart. 🙂 Thank you!

JB reading your post gladdens my heart. Thank you. It reminded me that a month or so ago I asked the Lord as I often do, “what would you have me read, study, or do today that will bring me closer to entering your presence?” He clearly said “read Mathew 5”. I read it but could not see the connection to seeing the Second Comforter until this fabulous post. It opened up so clearly to my mind and I know that’s why the Lord led me to it.

How might being salt and a light apply to this? Verses 13-16 mention that.

Do you have any thoughts on verses 13-16 which speak of us being the salt and light and how this may relate to these same concepts?
    Thank you

  6. I waited to respond to your question because I wanted to ask the Lord directly in person. Here was the response:

The Lord said that we must be pure and white like salt, that through us the souls of this temporal earth may be saved. That they may see our good works and that our light will guide them to Him. When we become His sons and daughters, and as the light within us is magnified, we have great ability to draw others to Him. If we pollute ourselves or hide in darkness we cannot be of any use as a servant of the Most High.

I half expected some mystifying answer I had never thought of: conductivity of energy, light, etc., but it was pretty straight forward.

    Thank you.

This response reminded me of D&C 103 which has a slightly different view on the 3 Nephi and Matthew:
8 But inasmuch as they keep not my commandments, and hearken not to observe all my words, the kingdoms of the world shall prevail against them.
    9 For they were set to be a light unto the world, and to be the saviors of men;
10 And inasmuch as they are not the saviors of men, they are as salt that has lost its savor, and is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.

  8. A year ago I was prompted to write and color code all the Beatitudes from Matthew 5: 3-10 and put them on my bedroom wall! It has been the only thing on my wall in a few years! I have been lead to compare and contrast at least 10 times the Beatitudes in 3rd Nephi 12, including the missing first two versus! It makes so much sense that this is a recipe for the second comforter! I’m reading your book titled the “witness to the gifts of the Spirit” and you stated that “blessed” means anointed of the Lord! Anointed is to be consecrated, set apart, and endowed with gifts, divinely destined! This is what the spirit has been trying to tell me for a year! And to share with others! Thank you I am eternally grateful!
